The best wine for fast food is and will always be a sparkling wine
Really ANY sparkling wine...
At our place Fridays tend to be fast food day combined with movie night. We order in, pick a movie, and have snacks and nice drinks. Since Friday also symbolizes the start of the weekend (although my weekends nowadays fall on random days), a nice glass of wine is inseparable for this ritual.
Having tried many wines in combination with fast food, I conclude that a sparkling wine is the best option and here is why: the acidity of a sparkling wine cuts through the greasiness and balances out the saltiness of the fast-food and at the same time it elevates each meal visually too. Let’s be honest: having a Burger with a flute on the site just looks very fancy and who doesn’t like fancy?

We don’t have to pop the Capital C bubbles with every takeout meal since a proper prosecco or cava does the trick equally well. Now there are some distinctions withing sparkling wine hat could be made to optimize your food / wine paring. Let’s dive into my favorite fast foods and the bubble I’d pair it with
Pizza & Prosecco – It goes with where it grows is an adage in the world of wine/food pairing and although (unfortunately) we have no pizza tree; I would always opt to pair a pizza with prosecco. Prosecco has stronger bubble compared to bubbles made the traditional way like champagne, cava and crémant which cuts through the cheese nicely.
Sushi & brut Rose champagne – it does not only look fabulous, rose sparkling wines tend to have notes of light red fruit and white flowers, which pairs well with the delicacy of sushi.
Cheeseburger & Cava – Often these wines are made from Macabao, xarel-lo & parellada. Which bring out a nicely structured wine with medium acidity and citrus tones. This counterbalance the juicy and cheesy burger. Cava come at very affordable prices which make the wine perfect for a weekly return.
Lastly an important benefit of sparkling wines is that the alcohol-free options are very reasonable, more so compared to red wines. And don’t we all have those days that we do want a nice glass, but just prefer to skip the booze? Pour yourself a nice 0% bubble and keep enjoying your fancy fast-food moment.
